Why Does SEER Rating Matter with a HVAC System?

All Contractor Marketing • August 11, 2018

There’s a lot of technical aspects available on your HVAC unit to signify how well it works. One of the aspects that you should consider when looking to buy a new air conditioning unit is the SEER rating. Learn more about the SEER rating meaning below.

What is a SEER Rating Meaning?

SEER rating is short for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio.

The SEER rating is quite a complicated formula that denotes the energy efficiency of your air conditioning system. It is determined by dividing the cooling output during a normal summer season into the overall electricity usage in watt hours in the same season. The result is a figure usually between 13 and also 23. The higher number typically denotes a more energy-efficient unit. The minimum SEER in most parts of the country is 13, but it is not uncommon to see SEER ratings over 20. The top-ranking systems have SEER ratings above 20.

Reasons Why the SEER Rating Matters

You should consider the most energy efficient unit for three main reasons:

  1. Energy Savings
    • As you already know, the SEER rating denotes how energy efficient your air conditioner is. When your system is energy efficient, it means more energy savings. Usually older air conditioning systems have lower ratings, which makes them less efficient. Although the minimum SEER rating required for a new AC system is 13, it is highly recommended to consider one above 16, especially if you intend to use you system frequently.
  2. Enhanced Comfort
    • Highly efficient AC units not only maintain the air at the desired temperature, but can also remove humidity from the air. Such units run long cycles, thereby cooling your home comfortably. Without proper humidity removal, mold and other indoor allergens can develop.
  3. Environmental Friendly
    • It is also important to consider the environmental impact. AC units produce greenhouse gases, which contribute to the depletion of the ecosystem. Having an AC system with a rating of 13 or above can significantly lower the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by your system. In addition to this, less energy consumption means less carbon footprint.
